Do not think about what the critics say or write. Ignore for one moment, the costs of watching them. The whole point here is to catch any of the current Broadway shows any which way you can. There are an entire multitude of world reknown plays and musicals such as Neil Simon’s version of John Waters’ HAIRSPRAY, or classics like PHANTOM OF THE OPERA; LITTLE WOMEN; WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?; SHOW BOAT; LES MISERABLES. Take in the more playful MAMMA MIA. Re-visit your passions in your favorite operas by attending the LA BOHEME re-make, RENT. But make sure you get to see those current Broadway shows, by hook or by crook!
What of you are not in New York or are not planning to visit new York, and can’t get to the current Broadway shows? Don’t despair. First of all, these shows run for years (the better and best ones, anyway). Second of all, the best are so successful and their so generous and respectful of the theatre arts world that the current Broadway shows get taken on the road—to Boston, Philly, San Francisco, and further.
What if you cannot afford current Broadway shows, whether they stay in the Big Apple or travel to Siberia? Ah, there’s still no excuse: there are a number of ways you, too, can be saved. Or, er, you can save money and still be blessed with the most alluring, engaging, and cathartic of the arts:
For students make sure to contact the theater box office, and ask for their student discount ticket prices. Most of these current Broadway shows’ theatres, opera houses, and symphonic or any other concert halls would typically have student price and even student group price available.
For those senior citizen, you have the priviledge of getting discounts for the most number of events, similar to that for buses and restaurants, etc. Make sure when you go ahead and order the tickets, that you ask about these senior disount prices.
If you can, go ahead and try for same-day or last-minute tickets. A ticket that is not called for at the reservation window by a certain time (often within a few minutes of the curtain call) is usually made available, AND at a greatly discounted rate. Show up on the day of the performance for any of the current Broadway shows you want to attend. Go to the reserved tickets window and ask if there are any no-shows. Also, tell the teller you will check back (at his/her designated time), or ask when you can return to check for no-shows.
Standing to watch a show is a lot cheaper for obvious reasons. Here in San Francisco, if you take an SRO ticket (Standing-room only ticket), you pay one dollar and agree to stand in the very last aisle in the very back of the theatre…at the very top of the outer space seats. But, for a dollar, you can even bring your own munchies and even your binoculars to the current Broadway shows, shift your feet on occasion, even lean, in some instances, and check out any one of dozens of award-winning, heart-endearing and rewarding current Broadway shows.

Wicked is a musical based upon the best-selling novel of Gregory Maguire called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This great production was staged using the music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz. It debuted on October 30, 2003 and has since conquered Broadway and its audiences. This musical is produced by Universal Pictures under the direction of Joe Montello and Wayne Cilento leading the musical staging.
Wicked was created to tell the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and how she was originally just a simple and green-faced Elphaba (originally played by Idina Menzel). The story develops and shows the friendship of Elphaba to the Good Witch of the North who is Glinda (played by Kristin Chenoweth). Along the way, this friendship sours as both witches fall for the same guy. Complexities develop as the Wizard enters the scene with his corrupt government. And since this musical is more like a prequel to the classical novel of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz, it is quite surprising that Elphaba would end up with Fiyero, the love of her life. There were mixed reactions to the musical, even The New York Times gave its share of criticisms but this did not hamper the production people from moving forward and eventually gaining patrons.
Since the Broadway production proved to be successful, there have been productions in other areas like the West End of London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Australia, Tokyo, and Stuttgart. There were also two tours in North America which made the Wicked cast and crew visit 30 cities in U.S. and Canada. Wicked broke box office records all over the globe with tickets selling like hotcakes in the cities of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and London. West End recorded an all-time-high of ¤100,000 just on its first hour of ticket selling during the musical’s opening. The musical started with $14,000,000 in capital and it has earned this back by December 21, 2004 just a year after its Broadway premier. The first year alone recorded a gross of $56 million and every week of performance proves to give back a million dollars at least! Wicked continues to break records of other musicals and, amusingly, it also goes on to break its own box office records. Wicked tickets continue to sell online and on ticket stores in key cities.
People are still going crazy over this musical. Indeed, so much has happened before Dorothy arrived in the Land of Oz-and this musical’s success is definitely one of the biggest happenings! More Broadway news available here.

Dating back to the time of the Ancient Greeks musicals started when the Greeks included music and dance in their stage comedies. From the 5th century B.C Musicals have developed into amazing acts and performances not even close to what they were in the past. Some include: Cats, The Phantom of The Opera, Broadway and newer ones like Hairspray and The Producers.
I have not watched very many musicals as they only come out every once in a while but one of the more recent ones is Hairspray. It is about a girl named Tracy Turnbland who manages to show everyone the stupidity in segregation and that ‘coolness’ is on the inside.
Tracy is a severely overweight high school student in Baltimore, Maryland whose favourite TV program is The Corny Collins Show that is broadcasted by Baltimore’s WYZT station every weekday afternoon. The show involves young teens dancing and singing up a storm. The manager of the station, Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer) goes out of her way to ensure her daughter Amber is prominently featured and that the show remains segregated. All of the kids on the show are white. Black kids are only allowed on the show on Negro Day, the last Tuesday of the each month, hosted by local R&B radio DJ Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah).
One day, Corny Collins (James Marsden) announces that one of the dancers is going on a leave of absence and auditions are going to be held for a replacement the following morning – during school hours. Even though their parents are far from supportive, Tracy and her best friend Penny go to audition. Velma turns Tracy away for being overweight and supportive of integration.
Unfortunately for Tracy, she gets caught and sent to detention for skipping school, but lo-and-behold, detention is where all the black kids hang out and dance. Tracy befriends hot detention dancer Seaweed (Elijah Kelley), who as it turns out, is Motormouth Maybelle’s son. Seaweed teaches Tracy some R&B moves that later get her a spot on The Corny Collins Show.
Tracy quickly becomes a big star on the show thanks to her great moves and bubbly personality but Velma does not see it that way. All she sees is how Tracy is a threat to Amber’s position in the “Miss Teenage Hairspray” pageant and Amber’s courtship with Link, the lead performer for The Corny Collins Show.
Out of anger, Velma cancels Negro Day from The Corny Collins Show and the black kids and their leader Maybelle have nowhere to express their talent.
Without giving too much away, Tracy shows everyone the importance of not giving up, of standing up for what you believe in and for the people you are friends with. While racism against blacks and segregation has stopped being the main focus in everyone’s lives, it is still surprisingly popular today among the less accepting of society. This movie shows us that it is important to be proud of who you are and the people you are associated with, whether they are fat, gangly, black or even purple.

Neil Diamond has been performing since the 1960s and is showing no signs of slowing down. Be warned, tickets to his upcoming shows are already available and his legion of supporters are snapping them up. He is immensely popular to both young and old in the audience. It would be best to get your Neil Diamond tickets as soon as possible.
Born January 24, 1941, Neil Leslie Diamond first played guitar at age 16 and immediately realized what he wanted to be. He developed a love of singing and was already exploring the option of becoming a life-long musician singing in a choir with the then unknown Barbra Streisand. Upon completing high school he decided instead to go to college and pursue a pre-med course. However the thrill of music and the offer of $50 a week to write songs did he realize that he wanted a musician’s life instead of a doctor’s.
His first recording venture was not very successful. He persevered and wrote songs for other artists until he signed with Bang Records where he got his first hit, “Solitary Man”. He also wrote and recorded during this period “Cherry, Cherry”, “Do It” and “Kentucky Woman”. But his ambition went beyond what Bang Records could offer so he signed with MCA Records in the late 1960s.

He got his first number 1 with “Song Sung Blue”. He also produced great hits such as “Sweet Caroline” (written for Caroline Kennedy), “Cracklin Rosie” and “Holly Holy”. Neil Diamond also starred in movies such as the remake of The Jazz Singer. He has written and sung numerous soundtracks for films. He didn’t produce hit songs during the 1980s to the 1990s but his shows still commanded great billing and huge crowds. His concerts were sold-out and he was 1986’s “most profitable solo performer”.
His popularity continued on to the 1990s and 2000s and he continued to produce albums as well as cover many of the classics. “Sweet Caroline” continues to be a favorite song and Michael Dukkakis made “America” his presidential campaign theme song. Neil Diamond was practically a pop culture icon with many of his songs being covered by other artists such as a highly successful reggae cover of “Red Red Wine” and Smash Mouth’s version of “I’m a Believer”.
His ongoing concert tours are selling tickets like hotcakes with fans from all over the country still coming out to see him. Neil Diamond tickets are available online from registered ticket sellers. There are concert tours and his shows will run in St. Paul, Sioux City, Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Washington, Hartford, Philadelphia, New York, Pittsburgh and Albany, among others

Madonna continues to confound the critics. Her latest album “Hard Candy” shows her collaborating with artists like Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. The first release from the album went straight to the top of the charts and the video gives us an almost fifty Madonna keeping up, if not leading Justin Timberlake on the dance floor.
Madonna is never far from controversy. A real example of the American dream, she was born Madonna Louise Cicconne and was raised in Detroit but moved to New York to work. She hit the heights of pop stardom early on in her career with an early album Like a Virgin topping the US Albums Chart in 1982 and selling over 12 million copies worldwide. She moved on to make more albums, tours, sold-out concerts and films (she has starred in 22 films).
Her outspoken manner (she is quoted as saying, “When I’m hungry, I eat. When I’m thirsty, I drink. When I feel like saying something, I say it”) makes her one of the world’s most interesting celebrities. Throwing off the conservative values of the time, the subject of sex was something she blatantly spoke and sang about it. What makes it even interesting is that she is an Italian Catholic. Mixing her cross pendant and brazen outfits of fishnet stocking shirts over capri pants, she has defined fashion in the 1980s as well as provoked uproar in the conservative side.
Her artistic style earned the praise of critics for her ability to constantly reinvent herself. From punk princess to androgyny personified, from sex kitten to maternal woman, her looks have become the definitive fashion icons. She has contributed much to pop culture as she has to fashion, film and music.
Madonna’s latest offering is also not without uproar. Her title track “American Life” is her attempt at having a say in the war in Iraq. The track was made before the war started and she tells her fans to find ways to divert attention from entertainment to the conflict in Iraq. Critics however view the video of the track as nothing more than an endorsement of Bush’s war.
Always one to draw attention to her art, with her often provoking statements (going as far as picking a fight with the Roman Catholic Church by lambasting a nun’s habit or French kissing Britney Spears in the MTV Awards), we can see that Madonna has since mellowed out. There seems to be a sense of domesticity in Mrs. Ritchie’s life with their children always in tow.
The legion of loyal fans will be out this summer. Her Hard Candy World Tour is set to start in August starting in Cardiff, Wales. Madonna tickets are already available online as well as concert tours and dates. Madonna tickets are now available for her world tour which includes Berlin, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Rome, Frankfurt, Berlin, London, Paris, New York and Boston, among others.

The mighty material girl continues to reinvent and surprise. Madonna’s latest album, Hard Candy, debuted at number one across the globe and has been dominating the charts since it’s release on April 25, 2008. But why should we be surprised? She has been doing this since the early 1980’s.
Always in touch with the current “state-of-the-art” (or should we say leading it?), the Queen of Pop’s album features vocal appearances by today’s hottest pop artists such as Justin Timberlake and Kanye West. The producers of the album are the highly respected Timbaland and Pharrell Williams who receive both performance and production credits on the album.
Madonna’s 2008 Sticky and Sweet tour is on its european leg, and packing out stadiums wherever she goes. All this in readiness for her tour that will be unleashed here in October. Her shows have been selling well, and many shows are near sell-outs. In Denver, her only show is scheduled for Tuesday 11th November 2008, and if you act quickly you can snare some tickets at reasonable prices. The show in Denver will be held at the Pepsi Center
And what are we to expect in Denver? It will be the usual stunning array of music, stage antics, dancing and a song list that goes back to 1984!! During her Paris show earlier this year, always the one to stir up a bit of controversy, Madonna tried a bit of push-it-to-the-edge sexual antics by kissing one of the female dancers, or one of the female audience members. Swigging champagne bottle she yelled at the crowd “Who do you love more, me or the Rolling Stones?”
The Material Girl always puts on an amazing concert, and this is one show not to be missed. Her current single with Justin Timberlake has hit the top of the charts all around the world. It seems the world can’t get enough of this amazing lady, half way through her third decade of constantly reinventing herself and of being a superstar. And her catalogue of songs is awesome including “Like a Prayer”, “Vogue”, “Get into the Groove” and “Holiday”.

In concert, Tina Turner’s presence and showmanship is described as “electrifying”, “awesome” and a “once in a lifetime experience”. This cannot be described as an overstatement. Tina Turner concerts are indeed all these and more. There are numerous reasons s to why she puts in such great performances. Or it could be because of her personality as a strong, willful and passionate woman.
Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. She developed her musical and singing skills as was eventually noticed by one Ike Turner in St Louis. Ike changed her name to Tina after Sheena: Queen of the Jungle and they became The Ike & Tina Turner Revue. They were married in 1962. The band rose to fame during the 1960s and 1970s, recording songs like “A Fool in Love”, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” and “River Deep, Mountain High”.
Tina Turner’s tumultuous marriage life continued well into the 70s. Ike Turner was a cocaine user who mismanaged the band and he produced Tina’s first solo album. It was the beginning of the end of Ike and Tina Turner. In 1976, over the Fourth of July weekend, Tina Turner finally left Ike Turner when he beat her before a Dallas show. She had nothing but thirty-six cents in her wallet. She left behind her abusive marriage as well as breached contracts.
Tina lived off on food stamps and appeared in TV shows to supplement her income. She finally got a divorce from Ike in 1976 and with trepidation commenced in earnest her solo career. She finally got the recognition she craved for in 1984 when she released her fifth album, Private Dancer. The album earned her three top ten singles in the United States, topped the charts in Europe UK and Australia and established her as a rock diva. She earned Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year all in the 1985 Grammys.
Tina Turner also forayed into film appearing in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, sung numerous soundtracks for movies, wrote her autobiography I, Tina and toured in Europe, the US and Latin America. In the latter, she performed for 184,000 fans and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the single performer to have performed to the largest paying crowd in history.
The 68-year old is currently coming out of 8 years of retirement. She probably never did retire. She is set to tour again in October kicking off in Kansas City. She will continue to tour until November and you can get Tina Turner tickets in registered ticket sellers. Tina Turner tickets are already available for her shows in Chicago, Minneapolis, Rosemont, Los Angeles, among others.

The Jonas Brothers are fast becoming a musical phenomenon. Although still very much popular in the US and Europe, their upbeat music appeals to the 10 to 14-year-old girl market. With appearances on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows like Zooey 101 and Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers have staged their own revolution in the pop music scene.
The band started with the youngest in the group, Nicholas Jonas who starred in his first Broadway show at age seven. He was originally signed as a single act and released a self-titled album with songs like “When You Look me in the Eye”, “Dear God” and “Time For me to Fly”. Around about the same time brother Joseph also performed in Broadway’s La Boheme.
The brothers decided to form a trio and connections with Columbia records enabled them in 2005 to start touring with Jesse McCartney, the Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, the Cheetah Girls and the Click Five. They released their first single “Mandy” the same year and had several of their songs featured in shows like Zooey 101, Disney Mania 4 and American Dragon Jake Long.
The group was dropped by Columbia but signed on with Hollywood records in 2007. They released their album self-titled Jonas Brothers and entered the Billboard Hot 200 in the fifth spot. They continued on making television appearances in Hannah Montana and performed at the Miss Teen USA. In January of this year, the Jonas Brothers jumpstarted their Look Me in The Eyes Tour with a show in Tucson, Arizona.
Their third album is set to be released in August 12, 2008. The 2008 live show has included some of their A Little Bit Longer songs in their tour, as well as opening acts for Avril Lavigne. The Disney Channel has also aired their reality series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream and has just wrapped up the Disney Original Movie Camp Rock. This year, a massive tour is planned, and they will start touring to promote their latest album.
The Jonas Brothers has been consistently compared to the Hanson Brothers who achieved considerable fame in the 1990s. But unlike Hanson, the Jonas Brothers have more attitude when it comes to their melodies. Their subject revolves around contemporary teen issues such as school, love and hope for the future. Their influences range from the Backstreet Boys to Weird Al Yankovic.
The brothers are slated to perform in Raleigh, Scranton, Saratoga, Baltimore, New York, Bethel, Buffalo, Washington, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, among others. Jonas Brothers tickets are already available and can now be purchased online.
